08-30-2011 Dave spent most of the day getting the inside of Joysea cleaned up.  The inside looks like Joycie is living here again!  Tomorrow Joysea's outside will get cleaned.

Tom called Dave today and said he will get here a day early (Thursday) ... yeah!!  We will start heading down the Mississippi Thursday afternoon ahead of schedule.

The Port Charles Harbor marina has been a great place to stay.  It is a family ran business and they treat everybody great.  Paul, the owner, installed a new stern bilge pump for Dave ... at a very reasonable price.  Fuel here was about 50 cents less than other marinas we check on ... big savings when buy over 200 gallons of diesel fuel.  The cost of a slip is only $1/ft ... hey loopers, need I say more?

08-29-2011 Dave has a new crew member coming aboard Friday.  Tom Lanum is a "Gold Looper" and is familiar with the waterways we will be traveling.  Welcome aboard Captain Tom!! Tom believes we can get to Wheeler State Park by Sept. 13th.  Dave is excited about that because he will immediately head home to see Joycie ... sorry Joysea, you are not his main squeeze:-)  Hopefully we will get all doctor, dentist and eye doctor's appointments completed and head back to the marina ... Dave and Joyce .... in time for the AGLCA rendezvous.  Pray that all of this comes together!

08-28-2011 Captain Dave is looking for a new crew.  The weather has been hot and Dave told Linda and Bob to go home because they are struggling with the heat.

Anna sent us some great pictures.  Above Joysea floating in our last Illinois River lock.

Above, Asian Carp jumps in Joe's boat.

Above Joe nets and throws unwelcome visitor overboard.

This carp didn't fair well ... what a mess!  For some reason the Asian Carp love the sound of Joe's boat.

Great photo's Anna!

Left anchorage at 6:55am today and arrived at the Port Charles Harbor marina.  Took on 231 gallons of fuel (ouch!) but got it at a decent rate ($3.70 ... ouch again!).  Having Joyseas stern bilge pump replaced and will stock up on groceries.  Pictured at left is Scarecrow on the Mississippi River followed by a pirate ship.

08-25-2011 Slept in and left the marina around 7:55am.  Scarecrow and Pilgrim had an hour head start  but we caught them at the LaGrange Lock & Dam.  It took a little more than an hour to get locked through.  It was easy because, once again,  we could simply float in the middle of the lock while descending.

We are currently anchored behind Buckhorn Island.  Tomorrow we head for the Mississippi River 48.5 miles down river.

Right picture of some locals on northern tip of Buckhorn Island.

08-24-2011
Left our dock this morning at 6:55am.  We have one dock to get by the Peoria Lock.

And what a lock through it was!  We went straight into the lock and floated in the middle while we descended only 5 feet.  Above Scarecrow and Pilgrim lead the way.
We saw our share of Asian carp today, but none of the pictures turn out.  Can they ever jump!  We thought maybe little Joysea (the dingy) might catch one ... no luck ... or should I say good luck!  Joe actually had two land in the side door of his boat ... pictures later.

We arrived at Tall Timbers Marina around 4:30pm.  It was a great cruising day!  Above Rod, Anna, and Joe relax on the dock.

08-24-2011
Hot air balloon floats over Joliet last night.
Left Jolie around 7:45 to get to first lock of the day(Dresden Lock) for a quick opening ... we had to "dog paddle" for almost 4 hours.  Lockmaster wouldn't 't let us tie off anywhere.  How much fun was that ... not!!

Scarecrow behind us and Pilgrim ahead of us in lock.  Both are loopers that we have met before.

We tried to get through our second lock yesterday (Marseilles Lock) around 5pm ... but turned around because it was full of barges ... found a marina 5 miles back and stayed ... dead tired.

Above is the city of Ottawa, IL ... floated by it enroot to Starved Rock Lock.

Today we hit our first lock around 8:10 and it took us about an hour to get through it ... not too bad considering yesterday.  We sat at second lock (Starved Rock Lock & Dam) for about 3 hours tied off to a floating bollard.  We cruised another 21 miles to Hennepin, IL and tied off to a free dock.  Another long day!

08-22-2011
Left the marina at 7:00am this morning and are currently tied to a free dock in Joliet, Il.  It was a 7hr trip only because we went by it thinking of more distance today.  When we got to the next lock we had to wait because of a large toll barge.  After waiting for an hour or so we decided to turn around and head back to the free dock.  Tomorrow before we leave the dock we will call the lock to see when is the best time to arrive, hoping to avoid a long wait.

Above left is where the Cal-Sag waterway meets the Chicago-Sewage-Shipping waterway.  Above Bob and Linda walk along the dock/park.  This area is know for some mischief.  Kids have been known to set boats free during the night.  The only way they are going to do that to Joysea is if they have a knife ... and Captain Dave thinks he would hear that.

08-21-2011
We left Michigan City and crossed the lake to the Calumet Inlet.  As we got closer the Chicago skyline was very much in sight.  Encountered 2 foot waves today but all went well.

We journeyed down the Cal-Sag Channel to the Marine Services marina.  Nobody home, but we docked Joysea anyway.  Heavy industry lines this channel and our marina looks like it is behind a land fill complete with railroad tracks in front of that. Sleeping well tonight?  Have not charted our next move, however, this channel leads to the Illinois River which will lead us to the Mississippi River.

08-20-2011 We left the Benton Harbor marina around 7am this morning for a short hop (31 nautical miles) to Michigan City harbor.  We arrived here around 11:15 .... Back home again in Indiana! ... but not for long.  When we get a weather break we will head for the Cal-Sag waterway which will eventually take us to the Mississippi River.  Today the weather forecasters told us a fib.  Less than one foot waves turned out to be 2-3 foot waves.  The plus side was our heading was directly into them ... a little easier to ride.  Joysea tried to spray us from time to time but, all in all, it was a good cruise.

08-19-2011
Last night we watched a terrific water-light show from the top deck of Joysea.  Unfortunately the water-light did not show up well, but we liked the picture of Ole Glory waving on the deck of Joysea.  Today we left the marina at 6:55 and pointed Joysea towards Benton Harbor.
We arrived at the marina in Benton Harbor at 3pm.  It was a smooth ride with waves 1 ft. or less.  Linda and Bernie enjoyed the smooth water because it made and easy task of keeping Joysea on course.  Bernie wanted a group picture so he volunteered to snap the below picture.  We were about 18 nautical miles from our destination when the picture was taken.

08-18-2011
We left the fuel dock, after topping off (at $3.85/gal!),  around 7:15am.  We arrived Grand Haven at 3:20pm.  It was a nice ride, but a little roly-poly.  Pictured above is Linda steering us past cliffs.  I was a contrasting site after looking at sand dunes.  Once again Linda and Bernie did most of the driving.  Dave actually finished a book and started today's blog update.
Grand Haven has much to offer.  The boardwalk along the Grand River passes through the historic downtown, a waterfront park and the oval beach area, with dining and ice cream shops along the way.  Joycie, you ought to be here ... more than 100 local merchants selling their goods!   Miss ya!

Dave takes Joysea down the river to the marina.

08-17-2011
Pat Hospodar call as soon as I posted the quiz question and of course she had it right ... Joysea isn't going anywhere today and is staying tied up in the Ludington docks.

We had a good time watching the coal fired ferry "Badger" coming and going today.  It is a huge ferry and Joysea was glad we didn't meet the Badger going into the narrow harbor entrance channel.

08-16-2011
The happy hour gang from last night, Larry, Jane, Linda, Bob and Dave.

We left this morning around 7:30am and arrived at the Ludington Municipal Marina around 1:30pm.  The ride was like yesterday ... calm and peaceful.  Captain Dave took Joysea out of the slip and turn her over to Linda, Bob and Bernie. Dave actually read a novel for most of the trip ... a first for him!  Above Linda, Bob and Bernie drive Joysea.  To the left is Big Sable Light house ... doesn't look like it is 106 ft tall.

Tomorrow waves are predicted to rise to 7 feet.  Today's quiz ... guess where Joysea will be tomorrow!

08-15-2011
We left the marina this morning around 7:15 and arrived at the Frankfort Municipal Marina around noon.  Quite a contrasting ride to what Doug and Dave experienced on route to Leland.  Waves were less than a foot high, weather was cool but sunny.  Above Linda takes a photo of Point Betsie Lighthouse which is reportedly the most photographed lighthouse in Michigan ... see below ... good job Linda!

Dave relaxes and looks at the giant sand dunes on the shores of Lake Michigan while Bob navigates Joysea.  The entrance to the Frankfort harbor is marked by a 72-foot breakwater lighthouse.

Tomorrow's forecast is a good one.  We plan to leave here and head for Ludington.  After tomorrow we need to be looking at the weather ... may have to stayed holed up for a couple of days.

Last night we had cocktails and appetizers aboard Bavarian Cream, so tonight we are having Jane and Larry over for the same aboard Joysea.

08-14-2014

Our Greencastle IN, friends are vacationing in a town close to Leland, MI.  They visited Dave yesterday afternoon and met Linda and Bob ... and Joysea.  Later we went to a very nice restaurant that served very good (gourmet) food.  Dave really enjoyed seeing everybody.  Pictured left are, Dave, Steve, Sara, Paulette, Margaret, bro-Murray, Ed, Cynthia and Carl.  Missing in action are Brian, Linda, Joe and Jackie.

08-13-2011
After almost 11 hours of riding 2 - 3 ft. waves Doug and Dave arrived in Leland.  We don't want to do that again! Above in the background is the Mackinac Bridge.

Today we switched crew members.  Doug helped move Joysea over 600 miles and left Dave at Leland ... great job Doug!

Replacing Doug as crew members are Linda and husband Bob ... welcome aboard!  Captain Dave can tell they are going to be a great crew.  Not on the boat for more than a couple of hours, Linda is cleaning the "bug mess" and Bob is already into minor repairs.  Dave is loving this because as you all know, he does software, but not hardware:-)

08-11-2011
We left Drummond Island around 8:30am and arrived at the St. Ignace Marina around 2:30pm.  We fueled up Joysea and was happy to only pay 3.99/gal.  Down side is she drank 198 gallons.  My other Joycie likes to drink gin and tonic but doesn't match the volume of Joysea:-)  Leaving Drummond Island we saw quite a few large ships.

The water on Lake Huron was a little on the choppy side, but not too uncomfortable.

Photographer Doug taking pictures of the marina.  It is a nice marina and we are still amazed at the clarity of the water.

Tomorrow we plan to leave early (6am?) and head for Leland a 77 mile hop.  It will probably take us 10 or more hours to get there.  Our Greencastle, IN friends are vacation there so it will be good to see them.  We will also be switching crew members.  Doug leaves and Linda and Bob begin.  Captain Dave appreciates all of the wonderful help!

08-10-2011

Weather forced us to stay at Drummond Island for another day.  Waves in Lake Michigan are over 9 feet ... Joysea said no way!  Our slip is on a face dock and we have been rocking and rolling all day long.  Winds are 30 ... gusting to 40 mph ... glad we are tied down but worried about the dock ... seems like it is coming unglued in places.  Extra dock lines are holding Joysea, but all are singing a song!

Doug and Dave walked 2.4 miles to the grocery store in the rain and on the way back a guy, going in the opposite direction, pulled off and offered us a ride back to the marina.  He worked at the marina years ago, was a helicopter pilot in Vietnam, and is now retired ... interesting person ... and a hell of a nice guy!

08-09-2011 We decided to anchor out behind Vidal Island last night.  It was a nice anchorage and very quiet ... nice because the Killarney marina was noisy.  We left our anchorage at 6:50am and cleared customs on Drummond  Island around 1pm.  We planned to head to a marina further down, but weather had us tie down at Drummond Island Yacht Haven (i.e. where we cleared customs).
We are not sure how far we will move tomorrow because of weather ... again!

08-07-2011
Above Joysea sits in front of the Sportsman's Inn.  It looks like a weather day today.  Thunderstorms are headed our way so we will stay one more night at the marina.  Tomorrow we will head for a marina in Gore Bay ... and then, weather permitting, Tuesday we hope to be at Drummond Island, MI .... yeah!
The Killarney channel we are on is an interesting mix of yachts ... and airplanes.  We see sea planes floating down the channel often.  See plane in background below.

The answer to yesterdays quiz is "Giants Tomb Island",

08-06-2011
Didn't get away from the dock yesterday until 9:30am.  We arrived at our anchorage in Alexander Passage behind Meneilly Island (below).  Above Doug (and Bernie) control Joysea thru the Georgian Bay.

Dave setting snubber lines at anchorage.

Quiz time.  Name the island in the picture above.  Clue; Paul Bunyan could be buried their.

Today we left our anchorage at 7am ... after consulting with our weather advisors, George and Pat.  We are headed for Killarney and should be there before 1pm.  Killarney is the gateway to the North Channel.  We haven't plotted out our next leg yet, but we are getting closer to the good ole USA!

Note: Arrived at the Sportsman Inn Marina in Killarney around 1pm.  Time to wash the bugs off of Joysea.

08-04-2011

After almost 24 hours of riding buses Doug and Dave arrive in Port Severn.  Too tired yesterday to do much but today spent the entire day cleaning the boat ... and still didn't finish.  Planning to leave tomorrow after lock opens at 8am.  Not sure how far we will get but hopefully half way to Killarney.  More later!

07-31-2011 Dave visited Joyce this morning and they sat outside in one of Mill Pond's patio/gardens.  It was a real nice morning ... weather hadn't heated up yet. Dave plans to pick Joyce up this afternoon ... for a date.  They plan to go back to the apartment and order pizza.  Dave thinks Joyce is more excited about the beer/wine than anything:-)  ... beats the pain pills!  Then the dreaded trip to move the boat ... both don't want to be separated, but know it is necessary.  Keep us in your prayers.

07-29-2011 Joyce continues with rehab and continues to improve.  Dave was worried about still not being able to see properly ... thought maybe we should call him Job.  He saw the eye doctor today and all the worry was for nothing.  People heal at a different pace and Dave's eye is healing just fine.  He will still need glasses, just not as strong as before. Planning on one last visit to the eye doctor next Monday and will pick up new lens/eyeglasses.  He and Doug plan to leave early Tuesday for Canada.  Hope to start moving boat Thursday or Friday.

07-27-2011 Dave's cataract removal procedure when well.  He hopes to get a green light on Friday so that he and Doug can leave early Tuesday morning and be to the boat late Tuesday night.

07-25-2011 Barb, Mike, Fran and Bob visited Joyce yesterday.  It was great to see them.  We think it has been over a year since the last time.  Of course we had lots of laughs ... and may have had some people thinking we were a little crazy .... well actually:-)

Joyce continues with her therapy and is doing great.  Dave is doing all of the pre-op stuff for the cataract procedure.  Then (sadly) Dave will be leaving Joycie and traveling to Canada where Joysea awaits.  It will be a happy day when we get back to US waters ... and even happier when Dave has both Joycies back.

07-22-2011 Joyce continues to do well in rehab.  She saw her orthopedic doctor yesterday and he said she was healing just fine.  The only disappointment was that he does not want her to put weight on the bad hip for at least 3 more weeks.  And, of course, Joyce wants to start using her "new hip".

Sorry about no pictures ... how boring has this blog became? :-(  Joysea has the camera ... maybe she will have some pictures when we get back.

Dave posted a message on the AGLCA asking if anyone would want to cruise with him from Lake Michigan to Alabama (Joe Wheeler State Park) and was overwhelmed with offers.  He talked to a married couple with a lot of experience and believes they will be a compatible fit ... welcome aboard Linda and Bob Wolter!

Dave will have cataract surgery next Wednesday and plans to leave (with Doug) for the boat on or around August 2nd.  At this time we are not sure when and where we will meet up with Linda and Bob.

07-18-2011 Website is back!  Everything seemed to crash at the same time.  What a crazy 2-3 weeks.  Dave and Doug rode a bus home last week while Joysea is being fixed.  We are not sure of the next step and have several options to consider.  Take Joysea back to George and Pat's and move her back to Florida in October.  Or continue to Lake Michigan ... and perhaps ship Joysea back to Florida.  Now that the website is fixed, Dave will keep everyone posted. Joycie, is doing great in rehab.  I think she will prove them wrong in terms of how long it will take her to recover.  Dave is staying in an apartment, given to him by daughter Angie's boss, Dr. Mark Smith, and is only 5 minutes away from Joyce.  I know we have said it before, but we are truly blessed with good friends.

Dave will be getting a cataract (or two) removed soon, then back to the boat

07-11-2011
Joysea going down the "Big Chute" which is a marine railway that drops us 57 feet and into Georgian Bay.  Picture at right is small boat in front of us in the chute.
Five minutes later we hit a huge submerged rock.  Joysea limped back to the Seaport Marina.  She incurred major damage, so Dave and Doug are taking a bus back to Indiana.  Hopefully Joysea will mend faster than Joycie  and will be ready to go in two weeks.

Joycie is doing well in rehab, but the therapy is painful.  She is being told that it could take a year before she is back to normal.

07-10-2011
Yesterday we made it to Orillia, Ontario and stayed at the marina.  It was a nice stop after a long day.  We bought groceries, ate at an Vietnamese restaurant, and called it a day.  Today we went thru 4 locks and are currently tied to a public dock next to the "Big Chute".  A very different way to lower Joysea over 57 feet.  More about that tomorrow.  One more lock after the Big Chute and we will be done with locks until we hit the rivers.

We are getting into the prettier part of the trip and rocks are everywhere.  Pretty ... and pretty scary.  The rocks certainly help you focus and stay in the channel.  Yep, Joysea fits just fine in this narrow channel.  We were happy not to meet oncoming boats.

Talking to Joycie on a daily basis.  Yesterday she told me if she knew the therapy would hurt so much, she wouldn't have broke her hip ... sure!  Hey, stuff happens (yeah, ... stuff is the family version) and Dave hasn't figured out the reason yet ... but sure does miss his number one Joycie.

07-09-2011 Tied up at a wall last night and left around 8am.  We went thru 7 locks and crossed Lake Simcoe.  We are staying at a marina in Orillia, Ontario.  Washed down Joysea ... and are ready for a break.  We will probably go out for dinner then check out the grocery store for provisions.  The weather has cooperated and we are moving the boat quickly.  We could get to Michigan toward the end of the month ... hey, Bud, I will be calling you about replacing my current 1st mate!

I forgot to mention, when washing Joysea down, Dave heard a loud crash.  Looking around he saw Doug flat on his back.  He slipped, fell and said "I broke my hip".  Not funny Doug!  He is fine ... slippery deck.

Above shows some of the narrow canal we cruised ... hope we don't meet an oncoming vessel ... we did ... ugh ... but survived.  On the other side of the coin, Doug relaxes as we cross Lake Simcoe.  Nice easy run for Bernie.

07-08-2011 We were up early this morning and left our anchorage a little before 8am.  We hit the first lock right on time and it was smooth sailing all day.  We traveled 58 miles and I forget how many locks. This part of the canal consist of many beautiful lakes (full of rocks).  To the right, Captain Doug directs Joysea through one of the many lakes.   We tried to get a overnight mooring at several of the locks but they were all full.  We finally found a wall to tie to in theTent canal south of Balsam lake.  No facilities ... but free!

We haven't planned our next leg of the trip, but we will probably wing it and go as far as we can.  Gotta get Doug back to work!

07-07-2011
My partner and good friend Dog arrived late last night.  We ended up going to bed around midnight and woke up at 6am.  After waiting forever for fuel and a pump out we started our journey around 9:30am.

The locking through was difficult today because we were in a group of six boats ... and the locks are small!

We went through 8 locks and are currently anchored in Clear Lake.  To the left is a picture of Lock 21 rear view after we were elevated.  Above, Doug holds the bow as we begin our elevator ride up.  This is the most unusual lock.  You float into a large bath tub like thing and as the bath tub on the other side descends we go up.

07-05-2011

We arrived yesterday at the Sheridan Hotel which is 5-10 minutes from the airport.  It is a nice hotel with wheel chairs and all.  To the left is Joyce relaxing in hotel room, walker on left and drugs on right.  It is nice to be out of the hospital environment!

We took the hotel's shuttle and got Joyce settled in by noon.  She is on her way to Indy with daughter Angie picking her up.

Joyce's pain is up and we think maybe the hospital was medicating her more than the prescriptions.  Pray that the pain decreases and the healing increases.

07-04-2011 Joyce is being released from the hospital today ... Happy fourth of July .... in many ways!  We are driving to Toronto and staying at the Sheraton Conference Ctr. Hotel which is 10 minutes from the airport.  Tuesday, July 5th she is flying United #  8609  leaving at 1:55pm and arriving in Indy at 3:24pm. My partner and friend Doug is taking a bus from Indy to Peterborough, ON.  I think it is a 17 hour trip and he should be arriving late Wednesday.  Then, if Doug is rested enough, we will begin moving the boat.  We will be relieving Doug of his 1st mate duties in northern Michigan and will be looking for another 1st mate at that time.

07-03-2011

Joycie and her new crew:  Nurses Bonnie, Nicole, Lauren and roommate Meriel.  As I said before, the Canadians have really been treating us nice ... and the hospital staff is no exception.  In fact they have been exceptional great treating Joyce with wonderful care.  A big thank you to all ... we really appreciate you!

Meriel is going home today.  She has been a delight for Joyce.  She is the youngest 94 year old we have ever met.  She is having some problem with balance and has fallen a couple of time.  Other than that, she has a keen mind ... and doesn't even have arthritis.  Hell, I always thought that was an old age requirement.

07-02-2011 Joyce is doing great.  Surgery yesterday and walking (with walker) today.  She is in great shape (except for the broken part) and it will help her a great deal throughout rehab.

Note: Surprisingly, her pain has not been too bad ... Thank you God!

Dave hasn't quite figured out how to get the boat out of Canada.  It will probably take 4 weeks to get to Lake Michigan.  Everything will work out ... we have the most important thing behind us ... now for the healing.  Thanks for all the well wishes and prayers.  It means a lot to both of us.

07-01-2011 Joyce was out of surgery earlier than expected.  Everything went well and she feels great ... but wait until the morning!  They will get her on her feet today and the pain begins.  She knows it and is anticipating a few weeks of pain.  Typically she would stay in the hospital for 5-10 days ... so planning our trip home is not real clear.  Once home she will begin rehab ... probably in Greencastle. Dave still plans to move the boat.  He may do it while Joyce is in rehab.  We would love to get Joysea back to Marathon for the winter ... miss our friends and weather .... what a place to spent the winter!  Things happen for a reason (not yet disclosed) but we have a positive outlook ... hope all of you do!!

Out of here for now ... gotta see my #1 Joycie.
